SFPs or small form-factor pluggable are compact, hot-pluggable network interface modules used for both telecommunication and data communications applications.

The form factor and electrical interface are specified by a Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) under the auspices of the Small Form Factor Committee. Using SFPs instead of fixed interfaces – e.g. modular connectors in Ethernet switches – allow the interface port being equipped with any suitable type of transceiver as needed as per type, kind, length and vendor. SFP transceivers exist supporting synchronous optical networking (SONET), Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, PON, and other communications standards. At introduction, typical speeds were 1 Gbit/s for Ethernet SFPs and up to 4 Gbit/s for Fibre Channel SFP modules. Now SFP+ specification brought speeds up to 10 Gbit/s and the SFP28 iteration is designed for speeds of 25 Gbit/s.

The SFP replaced the larger and legacy GBIC in most applications and has been referred to as a Mini-GBIC. A slightly larger sibling is the four-lane Quad Small Formfactor Pluggable or QSFP). The additional lanes allow speeds of 4 times their corresponding SFP. Later, the QSFP28 variant was published allowing speeds up to 100 Gbit/s and then closely related QSFP56 was standardized doubling the top speeds to 200 Gbit/s. Both an SFP-DD, which allows for 100 Gbit/s over two lanes, as well as a QSFP-DD specification, which allows for 400 Gbit/s over eight lanes, have been recently published. These use a form factor which is backwardly compatible to their respective predecessors.

CLOUD & OPTICAL TRANSCEIVERS

The Cloud Data Centre are the infrastructure of cloud computing networks, mainly composed of switches and servers.

Fibre optic cables and optical transceivers, or active optical cables and direct attach cables are used for the connection. In the cloud data centres, the explosive growth of the traffic is driving the data rate of optical transceivers to escalate and accelerate. It has taken 5 years from 10G to 40G, then 4 years from 40G to 100G, and may likely take only 3 years from 100G to 400G.

All the export data in the future data centres need to go through the internal mass operation. The flow of the east-west direction in the data centre is turbulent, and the flat data centre architecture makes the 100G optical transceiver market continue to grow at a high speed.

STANDARD OPTICAL TRANSCEIVERS

SFP and SFP+ optics are designed to support SONET, Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and other communications standards. Most SFP optics are used for Gigabit Ethernet and come in a wide variety of transmitters/receivers for different distances and fibre types as well as conversion to RJ-45 (copper). IPG’ SFP optics are compliant with MSA (Multi Source Agreement) SFP’ specification. Other protocols can be used such as Fibre Channel and STM/OC. In today’s current market, 10G speeds can also be achieved with SFP+ optics. SFP optics come in 4 different versions: T, SX, LX, and ZX. The SX version will work on Multi-mode fibre, the other 2 work only on Single-mode fibre. The LX will cover a max of 10km and the ZX a max of 80. The T version is for RJ-45 connector. SFP optics come with DDM (Digital Diagnostic Monitoring) enabling the monitor of temperature, voltage use, Tx power and Rx power of the SFP optics. Most recent switches have this functionality built in. IPG offers SFP optics compatible for most manufacturers.

SFP+ TRANSCEIVERS

The SFP+ modules (enhanced small form-factor pluggable) are an enhanced version of the SFP that supports data rates up to 16 Gigabit. They support 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel, 10 Gigabit Ethernet and Optical Transport Network standard OTU-2. It is a popular industry format supported by many networking vendors.
